Srilankan Airlines switches to SITA flight planning

SriLankan Airlines has switched over to a sophisticated new flight planning system to make on ground flight planning more streamlined and cost effective.

The new system, SITA flight planning, replaces an old text based system and provides flight information in a computerized graphic format.

Before each flight, flight dispatchers (flight planners) provide pilots with a comprehensive report of information on the flight routes, including weather conditions, route options, track, aircraft speed, elapsed time, flight level, closure of airports en route (if any), fuel requirement etc.

With SITA's advanced technology, flight planners have access to much more flight information than before.

A special feature of the system called GrafLite, indicates up-to-date weather conditions right along the route from origin to destination, on a 29 inch screen.

Another special feature enables flight operations to be more cost effective. The system displays overall costs of each route, including over-flying costs, fuel consumption and operating cost (i.e. cost of maintenance) of the aircraft in a cost index, assisting flight planners to choose the most cost effective route accurately.

The SITA Flight Planning System also forecasts fuel burn more correctly so that no more fuel than is necessary is uplifted on a flight. The system also has the facility to link the computerized flight plan to the Airline's fuel management system, which will maximize the performance of the aircraft. At present this link is with another provider.

The system's weather options indicate the weather conditions at any airport and cyclone conditions around the world. The system also indicates winds and temperature at different flight levels, taking into consideration the aerodynamics of the aircraft and gives the optimum flight levels for each sector.

SITA is a London based flight plan system provider and used by major airlines including Malaysian Airlines and Qantas.

Revised summer schedule

With the scheduled re-entry of its third Airbus A340 to its fleet on 1 September 2001, SriLankan Airlines announces its revised summer schedule which will operate upto 27th October 2001.

The airline will then be in a position to add three destinations to its current route network of 23 destinations and increase flights to three more cities.

Paris, Abu Dhabi and New Delhi will become online once again, while frequencies will be increased to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Zurich.

At this juncture, SriLankan has also had to rationalize its route network and is compelled to cease operations to Frankfurt and Rome using its own aircraft. However plans are being made to continue serving these and other points under a codeshare arrangement with the airline's partner, Emirates.

SriLankan's winter schedule will be announced shortly.

Srilankan in "Wanderlust" Top 1

SriLankan Airlines has recently been voted eighth in the Top Major Airline category in thetravel awards for 2001 announced by Wanderlust magazine of the UK.

This is a significant award for SriLankan Airlines since the top ten places in these travel awards are usually awarded to the 'big players' in the commercial aviation industry.

Wanderlust is a bi-monthly travel magazine in the UK and announces annual travel awards based on reader surveys. For 2001, 3,570 readers were asked to vote for three airlines from among 189 airlines and score each on their merits. Final positions were based on an average score for the entry (converted to a percentage) so that satisfaction rather than number of votes was what mattered.

SriLankan Airlines with a percentage of 82.5 came eighth after Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Thai Airways, SAS, Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic, and Cathay Pacific and ahead of LanChile and Swissair.

Says SriLankan's CEO, Peter Hill: "It's really encouraging to see SriLankan increasingly appearing in market surveys that are historically dominated by the 'big boys'. The award illustrates vedry well the point of working hard on consistently getting the basics right and offering value for money together with genuine hospitality and on-time performance.

Earlier this year, SKYTRAX Research of the UK voted SriLankan Airlines, Airline of the Year 2001 - Central Asia from the largest ever global survey of airline passengers (2.7 million votes) over a period of nine months.
