His Excellency Mr. Bernard Savage, Ambassador,
Delegation of the European Commission to Sri Lanka & Maldives
on
‘The European Union & Sri Lanka: Present & Future of EU relations
Wednesday, 25th February 2009, 12.15 – 02.30p.m., Union Ballroom – Hilton Colombo Residence
Relations between the European Union & Sri Lanka go back to over 20 years. Identified as one of the first Asian countries to sign a formal agreement with the European Union in 1975; cooperation between the two countries are broadly in the key areas of Political cooperation, Trade and economic cooperation, Humanitarian and development aid & education and cultural cooperation.
In today’s context Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner is no other than The European Union! Further, the EU development plan for the period 2007 – 2013 earmarks USD 112 million for assistance to Sri Lanka under the Development Cooperation Instrument in 2007-2013 with a focus on supporting the peace process and poverty reduction in the North and East. With the global economic challenges ahead, heightened with national constraints one wonders what lies ahead for Sri Lanka?
- What is the current stance of the European Union on Sri Lanka?
- How & Will the EU enhance and increase relation with Sri Lanka?
- What are the future EC strategies & policies for Sri Lanka?
- What lies ahead for future political co-operation?
- What lies ahead for future development an Trade & Economic co-operation?
- How will Sri Lankas’ largest trading partner support Sri Lanka?
